About Us

The Dunlap family
Meet the Dunlap Family
When Mike and Sue started the farm in 1985 they only had an 18 month old son, Joseph. We planted the first seedlings while he played under an old apple tree in the shade. My wife, Sue, and my parents helped plant as she was awaiting the birth of our second child, Ben, who would arrive in August that year. The boys were helping on the farm as soon as they were physically able. Our third child, Katie, came in 1994 and has livened up all our lives as only a daughter and sister can do. All of our children have helped in many ways to make our Christmas tree farm a Family Tree Farm!!

Mike graduated from Ohio State University in 1975 and started work that same year at Wooster’s OARDC/OSU in the Entomology Dept. My work was centered on insect pests of trees and shrubs and I became very interested in Christmas tree production. I had visited several Christmas tree farms and did research on insect pests on those farms as well.

Sue graduated from Ohio State University, as well, and her degree was in Elementary Education. Teaching jobs were hard to find so she substituted for several years before getting a library position at OARDC/OSU. She later was hired by The College of Wooster in the library as ‘Preservation Specialist’ in book repair.

We are now both retired from our vocations, but actually working harder at a variety of things we love to do; which includes growing Christmas trees. Our kids have grown up and we now have some very special grand kids who live in Montana.

Dunlap Family Tree Farm
Our Family Tree Farm began in early spring of 1985 by placing an ad in the Wooster Daily Record searching for 8-10 acres for Christmas tree production. We were contacted by a realtor that had 16 acres of tillable land that was land locked but had an agriculture access. The property was surrounded by ten 1-2 acre vacant building lots, so we also purchased one of them to build our future home on. We started planting 1 acre of Christmas tree seedlings that same spring in 1985 and leased out the remaining acres of land to a nearby farmer. Since then we have planted 1-2 acres (about 1000 to 1800 tree seedlings) each year. It was 1991 when we finally saw harvest of our first trees.

We look forward to each Christmas as we get to meet so many wonderful people that are looking for their perfect tree. We hope you will make Family Tree Farm your family’s tradition!
